When maxing out the level on this power, Shepard can either choose Improved Cryo Ammo for themselves, which freezes targets for up to seven seconds, or they can choose Squad Cryo Ammo, which grants the entire squad access to the Cryo ammo power, freezing their targets for five seconds. Rank three sustains the freeze for five seconds. At rank 1, targets are frozen for three seconds. Rank two freezes them for four seconds. This ammo power levels up through four ranks, increasing the amount of time that targets are frozen in place with each level. While frozen and unable to move, there is a chance that enemies can be instantly killed with a second shot, which causes the body to shatter into millions of crystallized, bloody pieces. Shots fired with Cryo have the potential to freeze enemies in place and significantly nullify any special defenses they might have. The Cryo ammo power, when activated, takes 1.5 seconds to recharge and will remain active until replaced by another power.

Obtaining rank four allows the player to choose between two upgrades: Tungsten ammo, which raises damage output to 70 percent, or Squad Armor Piercing Ammo, which grants the entire squad Armor Piercing Ammo at 50 percent damage. At rank two, the damage output increases to 40 percent, and rank three increases it to 50 percent. Initially, the Armor Piercing ammo power deals 30 percent damage. Once used, this power recharges after 1.5 seconds, and there are four power ranks that increase the damage output as they are leveled up. Once this ammo power has been equipped, it lasts until it's replaced by another power or, in some cases, until the mission ends.

It works well against Krogans, gunships, YMIR mechs and armored soldiers standing between Shepard and the completion of their mission. It tears through layers of armor to expose the bodies and electrical systems underneath so they can be destroyed. The Armor Piercing ammo power is relatively basic.
